Young people as members of a community have their own needs

Bulleted horizontal rule

All too often young people are portrayed as being the cause of many problems in communities and are viewed with suspicion and hostility. However, it may be suggested that often the problems lie not with the young people but as a result of a breakdown in communication and understanding between generations.

Many of the projects undertaken by Groundwork provide a variety of experiences that enable young people and other residents to begin to break down barriers. Rather than being regarded as a problem, the young people involved can then be seen as important members of the community, offering a wide range of ideas and skills.

Environmental improvement projects which involve young people in the decision making process can also provide opportunities for them to enhance and learn new skills such as communication and problem solving. This allows them to develop a sense of belonging and pride in their local areas.

In short, environmental improvement projects enable young people to become better citizens whilst simultaneously creating new and much needed facilities for whole communities.
