Creating opportunities for people to learn new skills and take local action

Bulleted horizontal rule

Promoting social regeneration by developing opportunities for training and employment, tackling social exclusion, empowering local communities, promoting environmental awareness and understanding and addressing issues relating to crime and security.

Effective partnerships with local people develop community confidence and encourages ownership. Building on this, Groundwork is increasing the range of opportunities for training and employment, promoting environmental awareness and helping to ensure individuals and community groups can take positive action towards a better quality of life.

For people to rediscover a sense of community involvement, they need a real role in shaping the future of their neighbourhood. People’s local concerns are rarely limited to one issue, so projects and programmes are designed to turn issues into holistic positive action.

We make a long-term commitment to supporting neighbourhoods viewed as disadvantaged and work closely alongside other organisations and existing initiatives to help improve the quality of life for people living there. We provide training and support to help people get more involved in making decisions about where they live and to understand the benefits that sustainable development can bring. We help people improve the appearance of their streets, parks and housing estates but also encourage them to lead more active and lifestyles, get to know other people in their area or work with their neighbours to reduce anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime.

We also work with children, in and out of school, and with adults to illustrate how our individual actions can make a difference to our immediate surroundings and the global environment. We help and train teachers to deliver education for sustainable development, for example by involving pupils in improving their school grounds or by establishing links with local businesses. We also educate people of all ages to act more responsibly with regard to energy, waste, water and transport, to conserve natural resources and to respect local places and other people. This includes training businesses in environmental management and giving people the skills to get more involved in local regeneration.
