Case Study - Oare Gunpowder Works
Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park

Seventy two years after it was last used to make and transport gunpowder, the former Oare Gunpowder Works is again setting the town of Faversham alight. Disused and neglected since the factory ceased operation in 1934, the site has since gained a new lease of life.
One of the country’s best preserved Gunpowder Works and
Historic Country Parks, Oare opened to the public in 2005 and
visitors have been invited to follow the marked trails that lead
through the woodlands and grassy glades, past the millpond and
discover the remains of industry that once stood. The country park
is open free of charge, 365 days a year.
Set in woodland, Oare has a unique character which was formed,
ironically, through years of neglect since closure. The woodland
was created deliberately to act as a screen to absorb accidental
blasts, and provide sound insulation and a source of materials for
charcoal, but has evolved to become a highly complex and valuable
wildlife habitat. As a result, the site was conserved as found
rather than repaired fully.
On 17th July, Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park was recognised as a leader in heritage, conservation, and community involvement by the Civic Trust’s Green Flag Award Scheme. This distinction also allowed for the country park’s nomination as a Green Heritage Site by English Heritage. The Green Flag Award sets the national standard for country parks and green spaces while the Green Heritage Site Accreditation recognises a proficiency in the understanding, care and promotion of country parks and green spaces with heritage interest. As of 2007 there are only 31 Green Heritage Sites in the country. For more information please click here.
