Case Study - Get Hooked on Fishing
Get Hooked on Fishing
Over 100 Young People living in the Dartford & Gravesham
area have been benefiting from a project called Get Hooked on
Fishing Kent led by David Evans, Groundwork’s Senior
Community Officer.
The Project uses angling as a tool to engage with young people,
particularly those at risk from exclusion or criminal
activity. It helps build self confidence and gain a sense of
achievement. Those interested are encouraged to help coach
others and hopefully gain a coaching qualification themselves.
David Evans explains, 'Our aim is to use angling as a tool to enagage with young people and to keep them from getting into crime by giving them a constructive alternative upon which to focus their attention.'
Groundwork has been working in partnership with a range of organisations to develop this project, particularly with Gravesend Youth Inclusion Programme and Adolescent Resource Centre. This has been crucial to the delivery of successful coaching sessions.
The feedback from students and schools that have already taken part has been very positive. Many schools and agencies have expressed a keen interest in taking part in any angling activities that can be provided and interest is far in excess of what can be provided for at this stage.
The project has been a great success so far and Groundwork is hoping to gradually expand the project across Kent if sufficient funding can be achieved. Anyone interested in this project should contact David Evans on 01634 855166.
