Case Study - Halling Summer Scheme
Halling Summer Scheme

A successful ‘Summer Fun Scheme’ in Halling for young people was held in the summer of 2006. The scheme was set up by the Halling Association and was delivered by Groundwork Kent & Medway, with the help of Halling Youth Club, Kent Youth, Halling Primary School, Medway Council Sports Development team, and the Villager rural community transport scheme.
The Summer Scheme was the result of one of the suggestions to come out of the Halling Association’s community consultation in 2005 that there should be more things for children and young people to do in the summer holidays. Andy Ballantyne, Chair of the Halling Association commented, “Our association is keen to support activities in the village and this seemed an ideal project for us to run in Halling”.
The summer scheme took place on six days during the first two weeks of August and involved 32 children aged between the ages of eight and twelve.
In the first week the children took part in physical activities, such as football training with Groundwork Kent & Medway's FA Qualified Coach, Jaime Welch, basketball, cricket, rounders and swimming using the facilities of Halling Primary School. The second week of the Summer Scheme involved more creative activities, including art and drama sessions which took place at Halling Community Centre and a day trip to Gillingham Ice Bowl, a first for many of those participating.
Not only was the Summer Scheme an opportunity for the young people to engage in fun activities, but it also gave them the chance to try out new things. The children were encouraged to develop team work and social skills throughout.
Chris Andrews, Youth Projects Officer at Groundwork, commented, “Feedback from the children and their parents has been very positive. The children especially enjoyed the swimming and ice skating sessions and they produced some excellent imaginative art work.”
