Groundwork Kent & Medway's Community & Youth team most often provide the front line of Groundwork’s environmental regeneration. The development of partnerships between the public sector, local business, service sector and local communities underpin the physical and social regeneration projects that Groundwork undertakes.
Working with local communities, our Community team helps and empowers local people to make a difference to their local environment and to their quality of life. We design and implement a variety of consultation techniques to understand the issues local communities face and how they might like to address these issues. We will then engage local people and other agencies in partnership in an attempt to address these issues.
Projects that the team are regularly engaged in include consultations, helping to form community groups, including training and support, development of play areas, open spaces and streets.
Our Youth team works with young people to help them realise their full potential within their local community. Our trained youth projects officer has experience in helping young people build confidence and self esteem through a variety of different projects. These can be as wide ranging as a video project to improve the profile of their community, to peer mentoring to designing a sculpture for their estate. The youth team work closely with the community team on many projects to ensure that there is a holistic approach to the way we work.
The team adhere to all Groundwork’s health and safety policies, child protection and are first aid qualified.
Walkie Talkies
Walkie Talkies has been established in parts of North Kent for some years, and is run and managed by Groundwork Kent & Medway. As the name suggests it sends trained community workers with local knowledge out and about to places where people naturally meet up and chat. Workers listen to the views of both individuals and community organisations, pass on useful information and collect people’s views.
If you haven’t come across Walkie Talkies yet you probably soon will! Their representatives wear distinctive red clothing and carry bags with the project’s branded logo on it. They are genuinely interested in what you have to say and keen to spread a positive message about all the good things that are happening in the town.
