Young people were using the new ball court at Castlemaine Avenue in Gillingham within 10 minutes of the lines being painted. They had been involved in the project’s development for several months and indeed took the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to see the area during the general election campaign.

The games area, funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister through Medway Council’s Liveability Programme, is next to the Scout and Badminton Halls.

A fun day was organised by Medway Council's Liveability Team on 29th October 2005 at the Scout Hall, with designs for the games area on display and Boukje Muskens, Landscape Architect from Groundwork present. Gillingham MP Paul Clark and ward Councillor Mark Last were on hand to lend their support, along with representatives from Moat Housing Society, Medway Council Wardens and the Community Safety Team.

Works started in late November 2005, with levelling of the site and installation of the sub-base. After the Christmas break fencing and the final surface were installed, and the court marked out for football, basketball and badminton.

Carole Brown, Medway Council’s Liveability Manager said that, “The Council, using Liveability funds, have provided a sports area which allows for a wide range of ball games to be played in a purpose built facility. Local groups will be working with the youngsters, helping with coaching and organised games, including a five-a-side football league.”

Progress of the works was closely monitored by local young people from the nearby Vineries estate. ‘The Word on the Street’, led by Rev Bill Clark, made site visits and interviewed the contractor for their scrap-book project. Bill Clark commented, “The ball court is a fantastic contribution to the community and will immediately benefit local youngsters.”
